The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), established in 1970, is a branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention within the Department of Health and Human Services. NIOSH is primarily the research partner to the enforcement agency OSHA. In addition to basic and applied research, NIOSH supports extramural research and training of occupational health professionals. Its responsibilities are linked primarily to worker health and safety but also to disaster response (the site currently features information on Hurricane Sandy). NIOSH tests and certifies an array of devices, including respirators.
